How studying the Qur’an transformed my life by Maryam

There was a time in my life when I felt lethargic and unmotivated. I had no goals, no aspirations, and no desire for growth. It was a challenging phase, and I had no one to blame but myself. However, Allah (SWT) opened doors for me when my parents enrolled me in Qur’an classes at a local madrasa. That marked the beginning of a positive transformation.

My mood began to improve, and I started to gain clarity in my life. I transitioned from being unmotivated to becoming disciplined and organized. My worries dissipated, and my mindset became more optimistic. I felt a sense of expansion in my chest, and my depression faded. There was an abundance of Barakah in my time. All of these changes happened for one reason: studying the Qur’an.

I had often heard the phrase, “The Qur’an brings Barakah to your life,” but I didn’t give it much thought, assuming it only applied to those who were extremely pious and devout. However, Alhamdulillah, I was proven wrong. Once I began studying the Qur’an, I noticed profound changes in myself.

How Studying the Qur’an Enhanced My Relationships

Studying the Qur’an, first and foremost, strengthened the most important relationship in my life: my relationship with Allah (SWT). As I embarked on the journey of studying the Qur’an, I learned about Allah’s attribute of Rahman. I discovered how Allah (SWT) protects us from harm and calamities and how He has cared for and provided for me even before I was born. This deepened my gratitude and submission to Him, turning daily acts of worship into a source of joy.

The Qur’an also improved my relationship with myself. It guided me towards self-compassion and confidence, helping me see myself as a servant of the Most Merciful. It made me a believer in Al-Mujeeb, the One who responds to all our du’as. It helped me develop a positive and optimistic mindset.

How Studying the Qur’an Improved My Memory

When I started memorizing the Qur’an and, by Allah’s permission, completed my Hifdh, I realized that my previously memorized Ajzaa were not as strong in my memory. This required me to become organized with my time and set a daily reminder to revise my previous Ajzaa.

Just as any muscle in our body strengthens with regular use, our brains also grow stronger with consistent practice. And what better way to improve our memory than by memorizing the Book of Allah (SWT)?

Comfort for Anxieties

The best remedy for anxieties is none other than reading the Qur’an. As Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an:

“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Surah Ra’d 13:28).

I can attest that my anxieties have significantly improved over the last couple of years, and nothing has helped me more than reading the Qur’an. When overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, I prefer to read the Qur’an for 15–30 minutes, and I feel much calmer, Alhamdulillah.

The Qur’an is a Source of Barakah

The days I start off by reading the Qur’an are the days I’m most productive and able to fulfill all my responsibilities. On the other hand, when I start my day by scrolling through my phone, I struggle to get anything done, even though I have the ability and health to do so. My days lack Barakah.

Bonding with Like-Minded Sisters

Studying the Qur’an in a class opens doors to forming friendships with other sisters who share similar goals. There is something sweet and comforting about a friendship founded on the shared purpose of studying the Qur’an.

The Qur’an has impacted every aspect of my life, Alhamdulillah. It has given me clarity, strengthened my relationships, improved my memory, and provided me comfort during anxious moments. The Barakah that flows from engaging with the Qur’an enriches my days with purpose and productivity. Beyond personal growth, the Qur’an has connected me with a community of like-minded sisters. I encourage everyone to immerse themselves in its teachings, for it truly brings light to our lives, Alhamdulillah.

Ukhti Maryam, your words in this blog inspired me deeply to start implementing the recitation and memorisation of the Qur’an more in my daily life. It is inspiring to read the barakah you received from Allaah, allaahuma barik. The next words really touched me: “the Quran enriched my days with purpose”. SubhanAllaah, sometimes I feel like my days on this Dunya are worthless. But when you start focusing on ibadaat and therefor memorising/reciting the Qur’an, it isn’t worthless, but indeed like you said: your days will be enriched with purpose.

بارك الله فيك dear sister for you inspiring words. May Allaah ﷻ protect you from alle evil and be pleased with you, ameen.

One thing I can really implement inshaAllah is starting off my day with Quran recitation, I have done this and have seen its benefits Alhumdulillah. This is a reminder to me to stay consistent with it.
